Landscape is transient, ephemeral when analysed over a broad timescale. Having reliable references to the former state of ecosystems is essential in order to assess their current condition and understand how lost nature might be restored. To be a historian of biodiversity, as José Aumente Rubio is, means tracing past landscapes through writings from previous centuries, allowing us to understand how the land was used, what ecological knowledge earlier generations possessed and how it influenced writers and poets, thereby helping prevent the gradual loss of collective memory surrounding a heritage handed down to us from the past.
