Federico Guzmán
Federico Guzmán was born in Seville in 1964, the same city where in the late eighties a generation of artists emerged that revolutionized the Spanish art scene. Most of these artists, known as the New Sevillian Figuration, vindicated the format of painting in the face of the conceptual and abstract currents that had dominated the Spanish art scene since the seventies. Among them we find Guzmán as one of the youngest members, who appeared around the Galería La Máquina Española. Even so, his work is mostly influenced by the North American conceptual authors of the seventies, since his work will derive towards a conception of art as a tool for the transformation of society.
His treatment of color stands out above all, full of optimism, vitality and tenderness through which he reflects on today’s society, always under a metaphorical discourse. Examples are his works where he emphasizes the experience of the exchange of ideas through the electric current or telephone lines. But his stay in Bogota between 1997 and 2000 makes him reflect on his connection with nature, something that will be reflected in his later works. Currently his painting reflects on dreamlike and personal worlds through geometric approaches.
