Association of Alfombristas do Corpus Christi of Ponteareas

The floral carpets of Ponteareas that are created every year on the occasion of the celebration of Corpus Christi take the name of this Galician town all over the world: in addition to a large part of Spain, they have been seen in Rome, Brussels, Braga and other European cities.

The neighbours of Ponteareas are the stars of a celebration that, since the middle of the 19th century, surprises those who discover it. More specifically, the first news of this celebration dates back to no less than 1857. These enormous tapestries are made up of hundreds of thousands of petals and flowers, giving rise to unique works of ephemeral art with which the Blessed Sacrament is received in the celebration of Corpus Christi.

This celebration was recognised as being of international tourist interest in 2009. Very recently, in March 2024, the Spanish Ministry of Culture has submitted these carpets of Ponteareas to the international candidacy for World Heritage, which will be evaluated in 2025.
