The best film of the Norwegian Oscars. Based on the passionate and moving struggle of the Sami people for survival and recognition, events that inspired a whole generation of young Norwegians.
During the summer of 1979, Ester moves to Alta in northern Norway to start working as a teacher. Like many Sami at the time, he is ashamed of his heritage and hides his ethnicity. Ester goes to great lengths to fit in, even engaging in derogatory jokes. When his cousin Mikkhal takes him to a camp on the Alta River, where people are demonstrating against the construction of a dam, Ester discovers that the struggle for the river is also a revolt against years of brutal racism and discrimination against his people.
