J. Esteban Hernández-Bermejo | In Search of Authenticity
Have we perhaps lost the ability to enjoy, to see, to smell, to touch once more the flowers of the gardens of antiquity? Guided by a world-class specialist and through his experiences in different regions of the world, we will return to the sources of knowledge of gardening in the past with one mission: to bring greater rigour to the use of ornamental plants in the management of our historic heritage. This is a task to which Professor Hernández-Bermejo has devoted years of effort, and which he develops in his recent book El jardín del Edén. Un viaje por la historia de la jardinería, published in 2025 by Espasa. The title of his lecture in the series Gardens: The Future of History is In Search of Authenticity: The History of Ornamental Flora and Gardens through Graphic and Textual Documentation.
Cycle of lectures Gardens: the Future of History
FLORA and UCO propose a series of lectures to disseminate knowledge and historical research on gardens and their changing social significance through the centuries.
This edition brings a special focus: using knowledge of the past to better address the challenges of valuing, recovering, managing, and making use of a complex heritage such as horticulture—both natural and cultural heritage at once. The best ideas to face the future may emerge from a mental stroll along lost, or simply forgotten, paths between the parterres of great palace gardens or the flowerpots of our ancestors’ patios.
