Dominique Roques | In Search of a Fragrance
Dominique Roques, the world’s leading scout of natural resources for fragrance-making, visits Córdoba at the invitation of UCO and FLORA to discover the region’s natural wealth and share his impressions and knowledge with the public. A unique encounter that will undoubtedly include, among other topics, the bitter orange trees that characterise the city. For here grows, in Roques’s words, “a marvellous tree, a symbol of its history: the bitter orange, highly prized in perfumery for the essence of its flowers, the celebrated neroli, as well as for the essences extracted from the peel of its fruit and its leaves. A true aromatic miracle.”
For more than five thousand years, humankind has sought the most fragrant natural ingredients to create perfumes: from the smoke of incense mixed with cedar aroma in antiquity, to the complex formulas of today’s haute perfumery, which still retain natural extracts in their compositions.
Rose, jasmine and orange blossom are pillars of this olfactory journey, and perfumers continue to explore the widest possible diversity of floral essences. Equally essential are aromatic trees, offering their resins, balsams, barks, woods, flowers and fruits: incense, Peru balsam, benzoin, sandalwood, juniper… all with extraordinary scents.
