FLORA International Flower Festival will be held for the third time from 18 to 27 October 2019. For the third year in a row, the city of Cordoba will be placed in the spotlight of international attention for 10 days, becoming an object of desire for floral installation enthusiasts and experts.
After hosting more than 600,000 visitors in the previous two editions, FLORA has once again selected some of the most distinguished floral installation artists in the world, who will visit the city in the months prior to the event to seek inspiration in its courtyards for the creation of a site-specific work of art. The results will be open to the public starting on 18 October.
This year, the theme for the installations leads us to discover new places: “The Journey”. FLORA has invited the artists in this third edition to travel and to lead the viewers of their floral installations on a journey. Thus, through FLORA and the best floral artists in the world, the courtyards of Cordoba become a gateway to new places and perspectives.
An international panel will select the best two installations at FLORA 2019, which will be awarded a first prize amounting to € 25,000 and a second prize worth € 10,000. In addition, a Public Opinion Award will be granted at the end of the festival to the installation that receives the best reviews from the public.
FLORA is an international proposal (just one Spanish artist takes part each year) and, as such, it is the best showcase in the world for discovering the latest trends in floral installations each October. The artists chosen to participate in FLORA stand out not only for their quality and international reputation, but also because of their artistic approach to working with flowers, which transcends mere decorative or festive concepts.
The artists reinterpret the Cordovan courtyards through highly diverse perspectives, cultural factors and contexts, affording a unique look at Spanish heritage. FLORA thus proposes an unprecedented cultural exchange between the traditional space of the Cordovan courtyards and the surprising contemporary art form of floral installations: a pleasant dialogue between tradition and innovation that is now a must-see event on the Spanish cultural agenda.
If Cordoba, with its patios, its popular celebrations, and the familiarity of its inhabitants with plants and flowers, is “the city of flowers”, then FLORA represents a new step forward – the most international step yet – in its destiny to become a benchmark for everyone who is interested in flower culture.
